Ladakh Pashmina Weaving
Pashmina is one of the warmest of wools in the world. Ladakhies are rich in having the kind of wool and weave shawls out of it. About three hundred quintals of raw pashmina is sheared from pashmina goats annually. The sheared one kg of pashmina gives 60% pure pashmina and the 40% is the coarse hair. Once the coarse hair is removed the sorted pashmina is carded by hand to make suitable for spinning. The spinning is done on wooden spindles called phang and not on charka which is common in Srinagar and other parts of the country. That is the reason that the pashmina shawls woven in Ladakh are coarse as compared to pashmina shawl woven in Kashmir. |
